BRIDGES

Bridges are a way of replacing missing teeth by using the teeth on either side of the space. The teeth on other side may need to be prepared although there is one bridge design which doesn’t require any preparation on the teeth on other side (Maryland bridge). In this type there is a wing that is cemented on the inside of this tooth (not visible) and used to hold the missing teeth in place. In the conventional bridge the teeth on either side need to be prepared and reduced down by 1-2mm. A cap then fits over these teeth and is used to hold the replacement teeth for the gap.

On average they last around 10 years depending on the original situation. Costs vary from £700 to £1400 depending on the size of the bridge. They are fixed in position making them feel natural after a couple weeks compared to dentures. Alternatives such as implants do not require any preparation of the teeth next to the gap although they require some surgery to place and the costs can be much higher.

A dental x-ray is normally required to assess the health of the teeth either side of the space that you want replaced as the bridge will have to be held on by one or both of the teeth. As with all advanced dental treatment a consultation is the place to start allowing you to go over your options fully. You can book online here.
