Fillings

Fillings are needed for decayed cracked or worn teeth. Without the filling the tooth can become infected internally leading to more complex problems later such as an abscess or pain requiring more advanced treatment such as root canal or extraction. Essentially there are only two types of fillings. Amalgam which is a silver colour, or composite which is tooth coloured. Amalgam is stronger and more wear resistant and easier to place in some cases. Saying that, composites has proven durable over many years and many patients prefer this due to its better aesthetics. Some also prefer composite because they fear the mercury content that is in amalgam although the evidence suggests this is a safe material to use.
We are happy to provide whatever choice is made. Fillings are usually placed with the use of a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and make the process much more comfortable. The process can take between 5 and 50 minutes although most are done within 25 minutes.
If you think you need a filling then book in for a consultation for £26. An x-ray is likely to determine the depth of the decay and then go over options and explanation of the process. Fillings can last for a few years to a few decades if looked after.
